The West End of the island where the cruise ships dock is truly beautiful, so there are many things to see and do. The island of Roatán is 48 miles long and 5 miles wide at its widest point. It is safest to book tours (whether private or cruise ship excursions) to get around Roatán. Ships from all of the other cruise lines (besides those mentioned above) typically dock here. In fact, this is more like a private island run by Carnival Corporation and, in a way, is just an extension of your cruise ship. This 10-acre area with its over 800-foot-long beach is dotted with water-sports, beach activities, beach bars and grills.
Booking Excursions through Cruise Line vs. Private Company
The various cruise lines that dock at the Port of Roatan have set projected cruise ship schedules a year to two years in advance. However, depending on weather and other unforeseen circumstances, arrival times and itineraries may change. Discover Roatan™ Excursions & Tours attempts to update and provide this information to island guests, but take no responsibility for misinformation provided by third party resources. At this bohemian island enclave, you’ll find lots of restaurants, bars, craft shops and piers lined with water taxis waiting to ferry you to popular spots along the coast. If you are sailing on Carnival, you can opt to book the "Jungle ATV Adventure & Beach Escape" excursion directly through the cruise line for $105 per person.

Along West Bay beach, there are several hotels and resorts, including the popular Infinity Bay Resort (pictured below). Infinity Bay Resort also boasts La Palapa, Beach Bar and Grill, a fun waterfront hangout with delicious seafood and flowing drinks. I snorkeled along the shore and saw gorgeous colorful coral and fish. I’m a travel agent, highly-experienced itinerary planner, Virgin Voyages aficionado, and Caribbean expert. I’ve been to the Caribbean countless times and have visited Roatan twice in 2023. When visiting, I completed two different itineraries, taking me all around this incredible island.

Taxis are available at the port for those who prefer to venture away from the port area. They are the most convenient and affordable way to get around the island, and drivers know the area.

It is an exceptional beach for swimming and snorkeling, and the location of a delicious Caribbean Grill called Ginger’s. Your guide will take you on a tour around a private island near French Key. Hydrobikes are easy for all skill levels and are an active way to spend a few hours in Roatán. However, paying a nearby resort for their day-use fee gives you access to chairs and a break from the vendors trying to sell their goods and services.

With BOSS Excursion, you can take a private or group tour and enjoy the amazing views of the Caribbean Sea. During your tour, you can experience snorkeling while exploring the underwater world. If it’s my first time to an island on a cruise I often like to get an island tour to really understand all the port of call has to offer. A good tour operator guide also knows all the popular places and even off-the-beaten-path locations known mostly to local residents.
At the factory, you can experience the chocolate-making process hands-on. You learn what it takes to grow cacao beans and transform them into chocolate bars. There is also a shop, bakery, and café where you can sample the tastiest chocolate in the Caribbean. Then the tour will take you to an authentic Cayuco canoe where the guide will take you through the mangrove tunnel. With so much wildlife to see along the way this is definitely a tour for nature lovers.
Coxen Hole (The Port of Roatán) cruise port puts you on the doorstep of the island’s biggest town. Located on the East End of Roatán, this excursion includes transportation to Oakridge’s traditional Caribbean fishing village. The town is an interesting visit, with buildings constructed on stilts over the water and fishing boats bobbing in the bay. You can book a beginner scuba excursion, where you learn scuba basics in the safety of a pool and then venture to the reef. Many boutique diving excursions will allow you to use your scuba certifications for magnificent dives in the deep.
